Professional Genealogists Conference in Salt Lake City

This week we are attending the National Genealogical Society’s annual conference in Salt Lake City, Utah for professional genealogists providing genealogical research services. There are over 2,000 conferees in attendance, a new record. There are ten lectures to choose from in each time slot, and every conceivable genealogy research topic is covered. The ‘methodology’ series of lectures is most interesting and focuses on proper sourcing of information collected during genealogical research. It just goes to show that you can never have too many sources, and never depend on only one source. This is part of our ongong continuing education that is so important. The Family History Library is in the process of converting 3.4 billion worldwide genealogy records on 2.4 million rolls of microfilm to digital so that they can become more readily available using today’s technology. It will take ten years for the conversion with their new automated system. They have 4,400 family history centers worldwide. ‘A Celebration of Family History’ is tonight with 20,000 expected to attend. There are alot of followers in Salt Lake City!

Professional genealogist submits to Sons of the American Revolution

Our professional genealogists have submitted an application to the National Society for the Sons of the American Revolution for ancestor William Knapp who served in the Revolutionary War. Information discovered during genealogy research may vary slightly regarding dates or places but it is important to include all of the sources found in these submittals. It is up to the genealogist to then reach an accurate and responsible conclusion based on this genealogical information. We included numerous sources for each generation, including some that had slight variations, and then reached a sound conclusion based on the bulk of the genealogical evidence. If you need assistance with an SAR submittal or any other genealogy research please contact us for a free consultation at 303-942-1120.

Who Do You Think You Are?

How exciting to have the new program “Who Do You Think You Are?” coming to us from NBC in March! It will be very interesting to learn of the celebrities’ genealogy and the great variations in their ancestry, and family history as well as the genealogy research that was done to discover their family story. Congratulations to NBC for airing this program and the celebrities for participating and sharing their family genealogy. I hope it is a terrific success.

Genealogy research overseas and genealogy charts

We are currently doing genealogy research in Italy, Sweden, Norway and Scotland for three different clients.  Among other research tools, researching overseas offers a whole different set of exciting challenges from researching family history in the U.S.  We are much more dependant on the Church of the Latter Day Saints (LDS) and the records they offer on films.  We currently have films on order for Italy, among others, for different regions all with a town called Prata.  We know the town name but not the region so we are checking three regions in hopes of discovering the link to their family history andgenealogy.  During the research process we also develop a working genealogy chart to better visually understand all of the family relationships and information discovered.  We share this chart with our clients during this process so they can better understand what we have discovered as well as our recommendations for research.  This also gives our clients the opportunity to decide on what information to include in the final family tree.  Once the research is complete we edit the chart down to its final product and deliver it to our client!

Genealogy Research for Sons of the American Revolution – final review

The application to S.A.R. is complete and ready for the next step which is to forward the application to the two S.A.R. sponsors for their review, comment and ultimately their sign off.  Performing the research to determine the genealogy history through our ancestor‘s birth records leading to the Revolutionary War soldier is key.  In the end this proves the ancestry of thedescendants through the sourcing of the family history and it will pay off for getting this application approved.  But first we need to get our two sponsors to sign off on our application at which point we will be ready for final submittal.  We have added a number of sources to strengthen the application regarding the proof of the lineage.  This should be well worth the effort it took to obtain this information.  Each of the last three generations are dependent on publications and we have provided four sources for each ancestor to include family genealogies, town histories and biographies that all provide a consistent family history.  We have the birth record and pension papers for the seventh generation but absent birth and death records for the fifth and sixth generations this is the next best answer.  We will keep you posted!

Missing Relatives

We just finished work for a client who came to us looking for his missing step-grandmother and her daughter, both he never knew.  At first I thought this sounded more like a job for an investigator.  After all, most people know their grandparents so we are more accustomed to finding people who existed hundreds of years ago, not still living!  We decided to take it on and guess what, all research techniques still apply.  More than ever paying attention to the slightest clue made the biggest difference.

In this case we were able to find the first marriage of the missing step-grandmother fairly easily by searching the state marriage records.  The marriage record gave us the county where they were married.  A road trip to the county courthouse provided us with the marriage license. The marriage license provided us with where they were living at the time of their marriage AND who stood up for them at their marriage….her sister!  We then searched the 1930 census information for where they were living and with both sisters were able to find their parents.  A quick search of family trees onhttp://www.ancestry.com/ provided a tree with the missing grandmother and with the administrator who is still living.  Contacting the administrator provided the missing grandmother’s daughter, not one but two!  We were then able to verify their existance through state birth, death and social security records.  In this case the missing link was the sister of the missing step-grandmother, who stood up for her at her wedding.  Who would have thought!

Sons of the American Revolution

We have submitted the preliminary application for review to the Colorado Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution and they have been very responsive and helpful.  The application is for my fourth great grandfather William Knapp.  All of the blood lines are sourced but the big question is what is going to be acceptable proof of the blood line.  So far I have used a sole source on two of the lines from the book “Nicholas Knapp Genealogy” by Alfred A. Knapp, 1953, Winter Park, FL.  Unfortunately this publication does not have any sourcing or bibliography so it is not possible to know where the author got his information.  As supplemental sourcing I have some town and county records and am waiting on hard copies to arrive from some local voluteers willing to provide information on request.  Thanks to them it is possible to get this information relatively easily.  So the bottom line is this, if you are depending on a publication to be your sole source of proof for a blood line the book needs to include the source to the original information.  If not, then you need to add another source(s) which in this case will be cemetery and county history records.  With the submittal of the preliminary application I have been assigned two sponsors who will review and sign off on the application prior to final submittal.  For revolutionary war pension papers for your particular ancestor check out http://www.heritagequest.com/which can most easily be accessed through most public libraries or the national archives.

Revolutionary War Ancestors

We have begun working our way through the Daughters of the American Revolution and Sons of the American Revolution approval processes in order to determine their individual submittal requirements .  The local Colorado chapter for the DAR has been extremely helpful in providing a local contact for the SAR as well as a contact for the DAR in Massachusetts.  The SAR application fee is $80 which seems very reasonable and their annual dues are $30.  We are working on the SAR application currently and it is very straight forward with their online pdf application form.  The key required documentation is proof of birth / parentage of each blood line ancestor going back to the revolutionary war ancestor.  The line are submitting initially is William Knapp and his father Justus Knapp, they both served in the revolutionary war.  This line ascends directly from our grandmother Marie Louise Knapp.  William and Justus both have ancestral numbers with the DAR with one generation of common descendants, so that should help.  Two sponsors are required for the application so we will follow up on that requirement and keep you posted as we move forward!

D.A.R and S.A.R.

Over the years we have discovered a number of Revolutionary War soldiers on both sides of our family who are our ancestors. This is primarily due to the large number of our ancestors who settled in New England, especially the north shore of Massachusetts, in the 1600s as well as New Jersey, Pennsylvania and New York. We have put in alot of time researching our findings but we have never submitted our genealogy to the Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution or the Society of the Sons of the American Revolution for membership. So now we feel it is time to make our submittals and share our experience with you. We have done our best to document our findings and through this process will learn what is acceptable sourcing and what is not. We will keep you posted!
